Description / Expertise
D148. An exquisite sub-miniature gilded carriage clock with four delightful naive panels in the style of Kate Greenaway, circa 1900.
Kate Greenaway (1846-1901) was primarily famed for her portrayal of children, often in a country setting, depicting the innocence of child-hood; many of her pictures being used as book illustrations. The panels on this clock are typical of her work.
To one side is a young girl with bonnet, wearing a long dress whilst carrying a hay-rake in one hand and a basket of flowers in the other. The other side shows a girl in a pink dress and blue bonnet holding apples in her apron whilst carrying a small branch over her shoulder. In the back panel there are three colourfully dressed children of different ages whilst the front one features a hen with her chicks in a field.
The eight day movement is numbered 114 on the silvered back-plate which has a cut-out to one corner to give access to the platform for regulation.
The clock still has its original leather covered travelling box, in very good order and winding key.
Ht: with/ without handle. 2.5" / 2" ( 6.4/ 5.1 cms.) £2,250
