Description / Expertise

Further major research is presently being undertaken on this important clock to encompass both the history of the panels and dial, along with that of the Neave family, with a view to publication in the near future. Please email for further details.

This giant superbly engraved and gilded gorge cased carriage clock by Drocourt is undoubtedly one of the finest we have had the pleasure of handling. The porcelain panels to the sides depict couples dancing in a woodland setting; alongside are children playing. The dial, which has black Roman numerals, is decorated with a celestial scene incorporating cherubs etc. All three panels are surrounded by a deep blue border highlighted with gold decoration.

To the top of the clock is an oval bevelled glass revealing an unusually large lever escapement. The clock strikes and repeats the hours on a gong and it is numbered 24988 to the bottom left of the backplate. This number is also stamped on the very large original key as well as on the base of the travelling box.

A panel fixed to the front of the base reads :-

'Presented to Miss Neave by the Tenantry of the Llysdulas Estate and well wishers of the neighbourhood on her 21st Birthday. 24th August 1893.'

Height with/without handle: 10''/8''(25/20cm)
