Description / Expertise

An elegant inlaid regency rosewood sofa table, circa 1820.

It rests on claw feet with brass casters from which rise scroll supports carrying a retangular concave sided base. resting on this is a shaped and brass inlaid block from which a brass strung arched support rises to carry the table top. This is of conventional form with flaps lifting up on either side and a single drawer in the centre.

The front and back of the table are decorated with three panels of brass inlay, those to either side being surrounded by brass stringing. Two lines of wood stringing, roughly 3" apart, run around the extended table top and within these are four long sections of decorative brass inlay to the four sides of the table. There are further smaller sections to each side of the flaps and inlay to the corners. Even the ends of the hinged supports for the flaps are inlaid. The table has been repolished.
