Description / Expertise

A particularly fine 8 day travelling clock by Thomas Cole, circa 1850. Although not signed by Cole on the dial, our clockmaker found the name 'Cole' clearly stamped behind the mask when cleaning the movement.

The clock has it's original leather covered travelling case lined with blue velvet and the shape of this follows the lines of the clock. When taken out of the case a curved bar at the base may be rotated so as to enable the clock to stand upright.

The clock has a shaped oval silvered dial with Roman numerals and the centre of this has fine floral engraving. At the top is a hinged oval handle which can be lowered when the clock is put into it's travelling case. Beneath the dial is a finely engraved silvered rectangular panel behind bevelled glass and this is surrounded by further engraved and gilded decoration.

Overall height, including case: 7.5'' (19cm)
